The efficiency of technology and communication definitely changed over the course of time. Technology has changed how we communicate, for better or worse. Our instant connection makes it easy to talk to anyone across the world and make a living online.

Technology and Communication: How Technology Is Changing Everything

The tenets of technology and communication have made some significant changes in the way we communicate with the world. Forty years ago, we relied on mailed letters, phone calls, newspapers, and billboards to get our message to the intended audience.

Now, we can get a message to anyone instantaneously through literally dozens of methods. Tons of social media platforms offer us unique ways to connect. Texting helps us talk one on one.

Online video means we can see someone’s thoughts in visual forms. There’s no end to the ways you can get a message out there. There remain its negative effects on brain development.

Any method of technology and communication you can think of has been changed by technology. Here’s a brief snapshot of what has been impacted.

Instant Connection through Technology and Communication Efficiency

No matter where you are, you can contact anyone in the world. Nearly every website or social media platform has a messaging function. But, technology dependency implies negative effects.

You can talk to people you play games with online, or someone who uses the same product you do. You can talk to anyone you want at any time.

With the ease of communication, you don’t have to worry about losing touch with distant relatives or fall out of contact with friends who move away. You can follow them on social media and keep up with their every move they post online.

There are hundreds of apps designed to help people meet others like them. Whether you’re looking for a romantic relationship, or want to make a friend, there are so many ways for you to connect with people.

However, this wide availability isn’t necessarily a good thing. It strongly disincentivizes people from going out and socializing.

When you can look at viable partners from the comfort of your couch, you aren’t as motivated to put yourself out there. Anyone can present themselves as whatever they want.

The Undeniable Impact

With how easy it is to connect with someone, commitment becomes less of a priority. Why commit when there are so many choices for you to try out?

Being presented with so many options can make you less inclined to engage. What if there’s someone better out there? What if this isn’t the best you can get?

Ultimately, all of these options end up taking away from your ability to be present in your current relationship. Also, technology directly affects almost all aspects of our life such as our sleep.

Marketing used to rely on ads in the newspaper, TV commercials, and billboards. Nowadays, these traditional marketing methods are ignored and forgotten.

Companies must put ads where their audience is likely to hang out. There are so many businesses, websites, and other content creators who are trying to get your audience’s attention. that if you don’t show them exactly what they want to see, they’re likely to ignore you.

Methods of Advertisement

Here are a few ways you can advertise your service or product.

  • Affiliate links placed on related websites appeal to customers who already trust what the site has to say.
  • Content marketing relies on building a relationship of trust with the viewer and relies on that relationship to recommend products and services that would be of use to the reader.
  • Then, social media ads use algorithms to show users content based on their recent activity.
  • Also, sponsorship deals on YouTube videos play in front of avid fans who trust the content creators of the shows they love.
  • Website ads display as banners and can show users content related to their recent search history.

News

News doesn’t just come from certified journalists anymore. As of 2015, Reuters reported that 32% of people get their news via email and social media. This means there is less emphasis on fact checking, and more on getting a shareable story.

Anyone with a smartphone can start recording video and post it online. Citizen journalism has pushed journalists to be more innovative with the news they report on. Sensational stories are more likely to catch on than merely presenting the facts.

The Shot

The 24-hour news cycle has produced such a significant amount of content that readers and watchers literally can’t keep up with it all. News organizations have to present their information differently if they have any hope of maintaining their readership.

There’s less time to work on a story and make sure it’s presentable. News has become more biased, with each outlet reporting more of what their audience wants to hear and less on objective facts.

Personal Devices and Multitasking

Almost everyone has their own phone and computer. This makes it easy to get lost in the throes of communication. The funny thing is, with more options to communicate with each other, we’re actually getting worse at saying what we mean.

Trying to keep up with all of the ways you can communicate with someone hampers your ability to speak clearly.

Multitasking ruins your ability to focus. The more you multitask, the less present you are in what you’re doing. Studies show that multitasking can actually damage your brain.

Lastly, it’s harder to organize your thoughts and filter out information that isn’t important.

It’s Effects

Our brains were only meant to focus on one thing at a time. When you force it to multitask, you’re drastically reducing your efficiency. So, your brain simply doesn’t have the ability to perform more than one task at a time.

One professor did an experiment where he forced students at a dorm to experience life without relying on phones or computers. These students couldn’t look each other in the eye.

However, they deal with other fundamental social issues. Because they become so used to texting or communicating digitally to talk about their problems.
